Yes, it has always been a part of the SignWriting system, to be able to write longer pauses by spreading the space between the two lines - that actually came originally from writing horizontally, based on phrases in the music - imagine if you had musical counts or notes above the signing in SignWriting, and you wanted the signers to pause for many counts in the music…the lines would be used to mark how many counts the pause extended over… Take a look at this screen capture…and the web pages that explain writing signing with music are listed below…
