Hello André -

Nice to hear from you. Technically the sign for CLEAN REPEATEDLY in ASL that
is shown in the attached diagram is not presenting SpeechWriting.
SpeechWriting is specific to speaking words from a spoken language. The
stacked Facial Circles with Mouth Movements that you see there are an
attempt to write some of the movements of the mouth that occur while
signing, that are not associated with speech from spoken language - there
are certain mouth movements that are done in Deaf storytelling, for example,
that are a part of ASL grammar, but are not related to speech -

Of course others are more expert at explaining this…I am not an expert in
ASL. My reading of Natasha’s writing is that the mouth movements are more
aligned with ASL grammar… rather than speaking any word.

As far as reading the facial expressions - we read from the top - down -
just as we read our vertical column writing top - down - the reading flows
in the direction of the vertical columns - read top to bottom -

Val ;-)

Thank your for the clarification.
I still have a question, for the sign Clean. Where to I start to read the
SpeechWriting? The first syllable is at the top or at the bottom?

Thanks

Hello Jonathan and Adam!

Thank you, Adam, for the description - perfectly explained.

Here are some visual examples to backup what Adam just explained. When a
portion of the top of the head is missing, it is easier to stack Head
Circles, and it is easier to fit in the necessary Movement Symbols if they
are placed on the Face.

Please see attached - These are very useful and we use them all the time -
Val ;-)

They are the exact same as the other with the top. The only difference is
that by not having the top, it allows for more room for facial expression
and other such things. It can also be used to stack faces on top of each
other without having to overlap, which can cause problems for mouthing if
you are stacking vertically.

Hi all,
What do the head viewpoints with top missing represent?
