now I understand the reason, so thank you for the explanation.
I'll do my best to produce a "almost ready" version for the 7th, but I can't meet Fabrizio before the 13th (I'm in Switzerland from 5th to 12th for the "Digital Humanities conference" where I'll present another part of my work on SW) so I'm quite sure there will be some last-minute change.

Yes. That is exactly why in our Call For Papers on the web  it gives a deadline of July 7, 2014, so we can have two weeks to make any changes or adjustments before the final presentation - as you say - we based it on the experiences of presenting at other conferences like TISLR -

If we are going to have interpreters, it is nice for the interpreters to review some of the material before the actual event -

Of course, our Symposium is online, and it is true that I am always flexible and trying to accommodate everyone too…so let’s all try to help each other - deadlines are flexible, and it all depends on how well you want your web page to be prepared before the online event -

Generally, whatever you can send us before the event the better it is for your presentation… this is for you…for your sake...

This is not quite the same as an in-house meeting online, because there are so many presenters from so many countries - it is slightly different.


Since we won't all be in the same room, I'm sure that Val is thinking about the possibilities that maybe someone can't see/show their presentation live to technical difficulties. The way to get around that would be to have a place that hosts them for people to download. With 40 presentations, I'm sure it would take two weeks alone for Val to create a webpage for that and upload them all. 

That is so true! Thank you for understanding this - yes, I am worried that something might not work well technologically and then we will need the web page for that presenter as the backup - and yes - I have 40 web pages to do - smile -



This might not be the only reason, but it is one that I can think of with relations to past experience with conferences. It's interesting how you said you've never had a "presentation deadline" where I think I have had that every time. Could just be differences in how conferences are run in different places. In any case, just thought I'd leave my one cent. (It isn't two cents anymore due to inflation. *wink*)

If I present "live", using a PPT support, why do I have to send the ppt 2 weeks before? I can use Hangout with "screen sharing" (or "document sharing putting it in GoogleDrive... I'm used to do this for my work's meetings) and make everyone see the presentation in the same time I speak... and then I can send you the presentation if you want to put it in an archive of the SWS2014....
Sorry but it's the fist time that at conference it is asked to me to have a "last-version" presentation so soon... even when there are interpreters, I just have to give a "almost ready" presentation 1 week ago.

Hello Symposium presenters...

There are two parts to your presentation…

1. The LIVE online discussion on Google Hangouts and YouTube in July. It will be for 20 minutes to 30 minutes with questions from the viewers. So you will have 40 minutes at most to tell people about your work and point them to your web page for more in-depth learning and viewing...

2. Your Web Archive page will include your Abstract, bio, links to videos, PowerPoint slides and documents, that will remain on the web. Your videos can be of any length (they can be long), and your written papers can be as long or as short as you wish…anything to archive your presentation.

The theme of the SignWriting Symposium 2014 is “40 Years of Writing Sign Languages”, since it is exactly 40 years, since SignWriting began in 1974.

PRESENTATIONS

1. Presentations deadline: July 7, 2014

2. Your presentation can be ANY length you choose.

3. There are three Presentation Venues: written papers, slide presentations and video presentations.

a. Written Papers accepted in the following formats:
• .pdf
• .doc
• .docx
• .txt
• .rtf
• .rtfd

b. Slide Presentations accepted in the following programs:
• PowerPoint
• Keynote
• GoAnimate
• Google Docs
• SlideRocket

c. Video Presentations accepted in the following formats:
• .mov
• .avi
• .wmv
• Flash
• WebM
• MPEG-4

4. Software demonstrations through download links can also accompany any of the above three venues.

5. You can present in one, two or all of the above three venues.

You are welcome to send me your above work any time you feel ready…as soon as I receive your work, I will post it on your web page in advance of the Symposium…

I am working on your web pages now, based on your Presentation number. It will probably take me all of June to do a good job with 42 web pages - we have 40 presentation web pages plus 2 introductory web pages and of course the directory of presenters ;-)

my presentation is very visual.  May I prepare in advance a movie of screencaptures of manipulations on my desktop.  It would be in Windows wmv file.  If so, does someone know a safe software to do such movie.  I found one, but I hesitate to install free unknown software:
