SignWriting List
August 3, 2014

Hello Claudia, Fabrizio, Steve, Andre, Adam, Charles and everyone!

Thank you, Claudia and Fabrizio, for pushing the Donation Button to help pay for the costs of publishing the proceedings of the SignWriting Symposium… That is a great help and I also appreciate your information about how your Universities work in Italy and France, and how you need published proceedings for your Curriculum Vitae (CV), very much like others need Certificates verifying that they had presented…So we do realize this…

I was looking for some of my old write-ups about the SignWriting Symposium, because I know I mentioned back in the beginning, that we were planning to publish a book of the Symposium Proceedings, and yes of course it will have an ISBN number...Our organization, the Center for Sutton Movement Writing (CSMW), has under its umbrella, a publishing arm, called the SignWriting Press, and the SignWriting Press (under CSMW) has ISBN numbers ;-)

Here in the United States, our government has certain laws related to organizations called “non-profits”. Every country has different laws related to charitable organizations.  Here in the United States there is a difference between a “payment" and a “donation", so I need to create a new web page that has both a Payment Button and a Donation Button available. I assume there is no problem with you getting reimbursed by your University, if I send you the proper paperwork, which I will try to do today.

One of the reasons SignWriting is successful is because we are touching so many professions and circumstances…We want to reach out to both academic institutions like Universities, and also to reach out to individuals who cannot afford to pay for anything…and to give them a free experience of sharing information.

So I need your guidance to give you what you need for your professions and circumstances -

I see it this way:

The Proceedings of the SignWriting Symposium 2014 will be published in 4 ways:

1. Presentation Web Archive pages that store all of the papers, videos, slides and abstracts, and author bios, remaining on the web for anyone to access and read any time, on SignWriting.org/symposium

2. Individual videos of each presentation, recorded LIVE online in Google Hangouts, with captions and interpreting, will be available on YouTube and placed on each Presentation web page.

3. Complete video recordings of the entire SignWriting Symposium 2014, captioned and interpreted, will also be available on YouTube and on SignWriting.org

4. A published E-Book of the 2014 Proceedings, available for download, will be available for download and Print on Demand. (maybe we could charge for this?) (would that be acceptable?) I usually give everything for free! ;-)

Every one of the 4 items above are large jobs. So we do needs funds to pay for a staff of people to provide these services… but anyone who cannot afford to help will not be burdened either…

Thank you for caring everyone, and I will answer Andre’s message about advertising funds soon - which is another avenue for income - taking in ads -

Regarding fund raisers…I will need people’s help with that - I have done fund raisers before in the local area and we never made money but only broke even - so if we can do a fundraiser that actually raises money that will be terrific!

Val ;-)

That is a great idea. I think we should do it for this year 2014. We have all of the abstracts.  We definitely need a free ebook. Maybe we could use the printed book as a fundraiser, with different price levels.

For next year, if the presenters get the abstracts in before the deadline, we could have the "Book of Abstracts" printed before the conference and available for free online or for purchase.

Donation done!

For the discussion about the fees, I think that we don't need to make pay everyone who want to see the SWS (even because it is impossible with hangout and youtube!). It is just a good solution to allow the members of an institution to pay for the service you gave them, and it will be on the conscience (and the wallet) of everyone to see if they can pay.

I also think that it will be a great idea, before the next symposium, to speak about the "accademics needs", because for us is not just presenting, is doing something that can be a line in our CV... but for this we need something more "institutional", even if organized by a non-profit association like you... for exemple, we need a "book of abstract" or a "book of papers" with a ISBN (even if it is only an ebook distribute for free.... or maybe an video-book?)... but this is another discussion and maybe we can do it later :-)

Claudia (hoping I will not seems too "indiscreet" but I really want the SWS to become a great regular meeting with an institutional recognition even out of your SW-List)

We should look for an event sponsorship.

I believe that insurance companies, cochlear implant,  hearign aid and batteries companies would be interested in paid sponsorship publicity.  Manufacturer of deaf material would be interested (alarm system, alarm clock).  Closed-cationing companies for TV also have an interest.  Telecom companies also have interest  (phone companies that provide translation service for Deafs).  It would take some thinking on how much you would charge them.  Not too cheap and beeing caught with low value image.

I had a training 15 years ago on this.  I do not know the real values of this.  It went like: 1000$ for a mention, 2000$ for a web link, 5000$ for a big logo...  Then you gather them all, the small and the big ones.  Some will want monopole in their own area, this is more expensive.

The idea was to prove them that their target clients will see the add.

Workers unions can have money.  It may be possible to target those that hire deaf people, like heavy noise printing industries.

Hi Erika -
As Adam explained in his message, it is not possible to have a transcript for captioning in advance of speaking. The transcripts needed for captioning are not a script…it is exactly what was really spoken…so that deaf people or others reading the captions can know what was said, at the exact timed minute it was spoken -

In the case of your captioning transcript, Erika, I introduced you and I interrupted you and asked you questions…my ramblings have to be captioned too - so the Deaf person reading the captions knows what was said - they can’t read our lips very well - remember I was in a tiny little box most of the time ;-))

So even when reading from a a script, presenters’ transcripts for captioning will be different, because of my asking you questions and the comments we made to each other -

Val ;-)

Maybe I can find some Oberlin students to help once the school year starts. As for my own, my page has a pdf with the text and the ppt has voice recording of the same. However, I riffed a bit off script in the actual presentation so I can re- write that out.

Hello Natasha -
Thank you for this offer of the idea of volunteered time from your students, and also the offer of your time to find grants and donations to make it happen. This is wonderful.

Sounds like a fun project for them, and very valuable for everyone all around. And a good educational project for your students as well, because they will be learning the techniques of the technology, plus learning the information from the presentations they are captioning…It is a win-win kind of project…

So we will need to work as a team with you Natasha, since our organization needs to provide you with the videos to caption, and to give you information as to what needs to be captioned next and so forth…

So yes, let’s work together… the information will be coming...

And thanks for all you do too!

Val ;-)

Hi Val and List!

I have had great success getting students involved in projects in the past.  Perhaps the editing and captioning is something I could get a group of middle school students to work on as a service learning project?  I will also try to involve other teachers with ASL students and Deaf and Hard of Hearing students to join us.  Contact me with details and I will work on grants and donations to make this happen over this school year!

Thanks for doing all you do!

Dear SignWriting List -

Our non-profit organization here in the US generally runs on a shoestring…in other words…very little money …we just manage from month to month and year to year and we are still here 40 years later!

So we plan to stay around another 40 years at least - so no worries ;-)

But at least for me, it is more fun to write sign language than to write grants - I am sure you all agree?

That does not mean I have not done my share of grant writing - I have. And we have hired grant writers before too…but generally we have survived on small donations from family, friends, and local small grants…

Well, maybe the SignWriting Symposium can help us raise funds. Because with more funding we can reach more people and do more cool projects! ;-)

Right now we need funding to pay for captioning 32 hours of video, and probably create some smaller videos from the larger ones - so that each presentation has its own individual video which will be placed on your Presentation web pages…

If you know of anyone interested in helping, please tell them about this web page:

Donate to SignWriting Symposium
http://www.signwriting.org/donate

I am still creating the materials to explain why the funding is needed, but I think anyone can figure out that 32 hours of video is a lot of video, and captioning it will take a team of people -

For those who have already created your transcripts of your own presentations - thank you! Your donation of time is much appreciated -

Val ;-)
