SignWriting List
March 23, 2017

Hello SignWriting List members...

I hope you will consider taking some time from your very busy lives to give this special grant request your support.

How to do this? Go to this link:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/slevinski/ASL_Wikipedia_2-D_Font_Development_for_SignWriting <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/slevinski/ASL_Wikipedia_2-D_Font_Development_for_SignWriting>

and scroll down. On the right side bar you will see an "endorse" button, which will give you a place to write your endorsement.

What is the project?

97.5% of the SignWriting script is already in Unicode (672 SignWriting characters were accepted).

BUT.... we need 17 new characters to give us the 100% needed to REALLY work in Unicode.

So this NEW font, will provide the needed 17 characters, giving SignWriting the Unicode needed so SignWriting can be used all over the internet.

Steve Slevinski has invested so much time and energy into the software development behind the encoding and use of the International SignWriting Alphabet (the ISWA) in computers, and the wonderful result has been that the SignWriting script is almost completely in Unicode except for the symbols that this font project will provide....so this new font development will solve many of the problems that have been discussed for decades.

We need the funding to accomplish this. Thank you for your support!!

Val ;-)

We have 2 weeks to demonstrate that there is significant interest for sign language Wikipedia and Wiktionary projects. The community review ends April 4th.

The endorsements can be written directly on the grant page linked above. Alternatively, the endorsements can be sent to this list or privately in email.

Our current fonts only deal with the individual symbols of SignWriting and require SVG to arrange the sign images in 2 dimensions. The new font will add the 2-dimensional arrangement directly to the font rendering layer, the same as other script fonts.

Building on the already accepted 672 Unicode characters for SignWriting, the new characters will make it possible to fully define a sign as a pure string of Unicode characters. The new 2-D font will use these Unicode strings to display SignWriting.

We will be able to freely copy-and-paste between websites and software without having to create custom plugins or extensions. The new 2-D font will definitely benefit the Wikimedia projects, but it will also benefit the entire SignWriting community.
