SignWriting List
October 26, 2017

Hello Honza!

Thank you for this message. I am glad you are still in contact with us too!

We are on the other side of the world from each other, and yet we can share.

One of the gifts I can give are printed copies of SignWriting books and materials, shipped to teachers who need them. Stefan's textbook is one of those books... and I can also send several SignWriting books from the US. Most of the books are in English and ASL, and Stefan's book is in German and German Sign Language, but your student can still learn from these materials and adapt them to Czech Sign Language.

If you want a box of donated SignWriting books, write to me privately... [log in to unmask]

And as you all know, most of the materials can also be downloaded on the internet:

SignWriting Literature Books

http://www.signwriting.org/library/bible/
http://www.signwriting.org/encyclopedia/

SignWriting Videos
http://www.signwriting.org/lessons/videos/
https://www.youtube.com/user/signwriting

Honza, do you have any SignWriting instruction materials in Czech Sign Language that you want me to upload and provide free for download for the world? I will be happy to do that...

And also, SignWriting is taught in Poland, at least in 2015 when they made videos - maybe we can reach out to Polish teachers?

Val ;-)

Val, no problem. Take your time, deep breath. I don't think you have slowed down. You are still very active ;) I can see over the ocean.. OK. Thank you for sharing this topics with other teachers. It will be very useful. I am sure, that shared liks and Erika's work will be also very useful for my student, but direct communication can bring more ideas and more iformation about this work.

Hello Honza and everyone -
Erika is not a teacher at Stefan's school, but is a friend and researcher who came to Germany from the United States to research Stefan's work with Deaf children and SignWriting and his development of Mundbildschrift years ago. You can read about Erika Hoffman-Dilloway on our SignWriting web site. I will send the links for Stefan's work, and for Erika's work, next message.

Both Erika and Stefan presented at the SignWriting Symposium 2014, and Stefan also presented at the 2015 Symposium. Erika is an anthropologist, and a professor in the Anthropology Department at Oberlin College, in Ohio, in the US. Erika researched SignWriting from a linguistic and anthropological point of view, and also wrote about SignWriting in several academic journals.

My gratitude goes out to both Stefan and Erika.

Honza - we need to find other teachers of SignWriting to help you in your search, and I promise I will try to put you in touch with excellent teachers. I am sorry I have not done this sooner, but I will try to focus on it now. Stefan is unable to work for health reasons and is no longer online. So we are blessed with all the gifts he has provided to us and we need to reach out to others to carry on his work. It is on my mind everyday to keep his work going here. I have slowed down a little myself, but I am still here, and I hope to do a lot more.

Let me get a cup of coffee, and our day begins here in sunny southern California!

Val ;-)

Hello Erika, it will be very useful.
Do you work at the same school as Stefan in the past?

Stefan (or anyone who knows), are you no longer active in this field?

Thanks
Honza

I have a chapter in a forthcoming edited volume that is also based on my observations of Stefan's classroom. I'll share it as soon as I can. I'm glad I was able to help document such innovative teaching.

Hi Erika!
Yes, Stefan is irreplaceable, as a teacher, a friend, a contributor to this List, and all he has done for his students and for our writing system and for writing mouth movements ...the list of accomplishments and contributions are so enormous it is hard to know where to begin, but I will try over the next few weeks, to pay tribute to his genius.

And thank you, Erika, for your latest research paper, which is on the front page of our web site:

Recent Postings

We all value your research, including the times you spent visiting Stefan's classes in Osnabrück -

Thank you for all you have done as well -

Val ;-)

As someone who had the privilege  to observe Stefan's energetic and innovative teaching I'm very sorry to learn that he has retired from the school - I can't imagine how he can be replaced. But of course I wish the best for him in all he does from here. <3

Hello SignWriting List, and Honza, Stefan and everyone!

I have received a communication from a friend, that Stefan has retired as a teacher in 2017, from the Osnabrück School for the Deaf, in Osnabrück, Germany. We can read about the retirement of three teachers at the school on this web page, and you can see that Stefan is mentioned:

I feel blessed to know you, Stefan, and thank you for all the amazing and fine work you have done with SignWriting, with writing speech and mouth movements, with presenting at our symposiums, creating such wonderful web sites, and thank you for your new software developed in collaboration with software developers in Hamburg, with your SignWriting animation and art, with your photography and uplifting spirit, and thank you for all you have done for the Deaf Community and for Deaf Education, and for all your fortunate students!

We are also the fortunate ones, to benefit from your brilliant ideas, creations and publications.

I am also semi-retired ... and I am slowing down a bit as well ... but at the moment I am still here and so I will try to create more tributes to Stefan when I can - He certainly is an inspiration to all of us.

So Honza, as you say at the end of your message below, let us reach out to other teachers who are currently teaching SignWriting at primary schools. I will try to put you in contact with others when I can...there are quite a number of them in Brazil.

And thank you, Honza, for being in touch with us all these years - You too have been an amazing source of energy and input from the Czech Republic, and we are interested in anything you can share with us too...

Val ;-)
