SignWriting List
April 26, 2019

Welcome to our new List member, Daniele Giacomini, from Italy!

Thank you for introducing your project, Daniele.

Daniele has designed a SignWriting database online. I visited this link earlier today: https://sites.google.com/view/daniele-giacomini/is-lis-notebook

It looks good! Thank you for sharing your work, Daniele. I look forward to studying it in more detail soon.

And there is much to talk about. SignWriting was used in Italy in the past, so it is good to learn of a new project from Italy.

There are several Italian SignWriting projects online. Below is a link to one. Later today I will write again with a more complete listing...

SignWriting Symposium 2014, presentation 0001

“Implementation into the SWORD project of observations arising from the process of users' appropriating and adapting SignWriting”  by Claudia Bianchini and Fabrizio Borgia

Thank you, Claudia and Fabrizio, for this project too - How are you all doing?

Hello,

I would like to introduce you something I made, using the SignWriting system, in relation to International Sign and LIS (Italian sign language).

I am not part of any institution and I am not an academic: I was doing that for my personal interest in learning sign languages, with the hope that, whatever I am able to do, it could be useful. To ensure reusability I included the SWU encoding that I obtained using SignMaker 2017 http://www.signbank.org/signmaker/#?ui=en .

My particular dream would be that International Sign could get more attention and could develop into an actual international language, for deaf and for hearing people. An international language should be unrelated to culture (and tradition), and therefore should not be “owned” by any particular community. In my opinion, IS has the potential to become such a language, for the benefit of everyone.

My name is Daniele Giacomini and I am 55. For three years, so far, I have been a special needs teacher for high school. I had the occasion to attend an introductory course to LIS (Italian sign language), and my need for making notes lead me to the SignWriting.

Thank you for your attention.

Regards,
Daniele Giacomini [log in to unmask]
