I am happy to report that a new presentation is now added to the SignWriting Symposium 2015, making this the eleventh:

Deaf people form different communities derived from their biological, social and cultural
backgrounds, thus different preferences arise as means of communication between deaf users,
mainly in sign languages. Among the different forms of representation of these languages, in
addition to traditional videos, there is the SignWriting notation system. This is a representation
mode that allows written/graphical registry of the movements used for communication. However
SignWriting is still not broadly used in computerized media, especially information systems
associated with scientific publication. So we present a proposal to translate the user interface of
the Open Journal Systems (OJS), a system for scholarly publications, to written sign language.
The translation process will be based on Brazilian Sign Language and will use SignPuddle
resources for creating, recording and sharing terms associated with the user interface elements
that will be translated. From the corpus filed into SignPuddle it will be possible to incorporate
SignWriting computational codes into the translation resources offered by OJS. After the
translation it is expected to analyse issues like the adjustment of the dimensions and positioning
of terms represented by written signs. It is expected that the translation process will enrich and
formalize signs and vocabulary associated with the context of scholarly publishing systems. We
hope this method will can be replicated in other sign languages and in other systems that
provide translation resources.

Thank you Ronnie, Milton, Sandra and Messias - and welcome!

Val ;-)
