From a Movement Writing perspective, there is a difference between closed Kiss lips with little wrinkles around the mouth, and open lips with little wrinkles around the mouth.

From a SignWriting perspective, the two symbols are there in the ISWA 2010, and I guess some writers have chosen to use one or the other…I am not sure if there is really a grammatical or technical difference when writing signs, if the mouth is slightly open or not…is it an important difference? There might be when you are kissing someone, but other than that?

Anyway, the symbol with the open mouth with wrinkles has been chosen the most by writers in SignPuddle in the ASL dictionary… I just searched by symbol, and there are more signs listed using the open mouth with wrinkles… see attached screen capture

Hi All,
In my previous email, I mentioned a symbol "described as 'Open Mouth Wrinkles Around Sides of the Mouth" with a hollowed center that's on page 163 of the textbook. I am now enclosing a picture of it for your information:

I look forward to your comments on my previous email.

Thanks,
AnnaGrace

Hi Fellow SignWriters --

Following up on Val's previous emails, I see that for REPORT and SOON, the lips are formed as if you are pronouncing "oo" (as in Zoom) with slightly opened lips, and the symbol for it is described as "Open Mouth Wrinkles Around Sides of the Mouth" on page 163 of the textbook although with a hollowed center. Right? (See enclosed spelling in this email.)

As for KISSFIST, the mouth symbol is more like a "swak" movement, right? Like you pucker up and then part your lips with a snapping sound?

Thanks,
AnnaGrace
