Hi Adam,

As an ASL teacher, would you recommend using the BaseSymbol 75 handshape instead of BaseSymbol 74 when producing the letter "E"?

I see a lot of new signers use #74, and I show them #75.
I recall these handshapes for the letter "E" were also mentioned in a Signing Naturally textbook.
(I posed a front/palm view of #74 for your reference:)

Thanks,
AnnaGrace

BaseSymbol 259 is similar to an “S” handshape (or a fist) except the knuckles are all raise. So I guess I could see why it would look close to an “E” in ASL.

The main difference is the thumb. In BaseSymbol 75, the fingers are on top of the crossed over thumb. In BaseSymbol 259, the thumb crosses over the fingers.

Hi Adam and all,

Can you please tell me the difference between these two BaseSymbols, even if it is very slight? (See picture in this email.)
